July 2011 - Monthy Recap
July 31, 2011
Of course I'm going to end my Canadian tribute series with the best version of the national anthem...
It's the YTV one! sung by Aashna! My elementary school used this as the national anthem every morning and i remember loving it. I also remember watching this when YTV started every morning. I wish it was still on slash was awake at that time... O popadum.

I was saving this gem. I love it because it has EVERYTHING!
Electric circus vibe, PJ Aashna, rapping, the let's all do it indian style bit, talk about buzzing batteries, line dancing, the country/maritimes bit, her asian and white besties, and of course the call adn response chorus. If I had to choose to be part of one music video i would honestly choose to be in this one because it looks like so much fun. I think I should do a cover of this and do a shot for shot remake...

How did I not use this song as a graduation song?
I think Simone Denny's singing embodies what I want to teach children. Don't go all out all the time. It's good to be loud and brassy and bold but if you're like that ALL the time you will be seen as being too much. You have to be able to tell yourself you're a superstar without being in your face. Simone is living it at 3:10 and that is what kids need to learn. let it shine and commit to it. At the same time, being sassy and having an attitude is completely different from being rude and offensive. Like Simone's voice, its spurts of finger wagging but lots of inspirational smiles as well. Don't forget: You're a superstar.

I think this is one of my life mottos. You Are What You Love. What does it say about me?
This song was part of the movie Prom Queen, and I remember loving it then and love it even more now.
I recently quoted it in a cover letter, if I get the job, i will get it tattooed because it will be my dream job.

Sometimes Im just livin on a perfect day, riding on a perfect wave, waiting for the end to come.
I should get that tattooed. When I get down, this song brings me back up again.
There was an era where music videos looked like this. Fefe, Black eyed peas (Rainbows and Vampires-esque) This one was done for Stephen Scott. this is almost like a time capsule for me. it was my first year of university and the start of my academic career.

Two cool Canadian guys. Roger Mooking and Roz Bell. How I love. You Me Us.
Do you remember that night? I remember that night. ... I was alone at Nathan's Phillips square. i was pissed but Roz Bell made it a happier evening. I got to see such a cool singer perform and experience him live. so although it was a cool crappy evening, i loved the moments.
PS. Roger Mooking's album comes with recipes.. so good.

The drag queen in the video, i feel bad that i forgot her name, performed at my Frosh week at UTSC. she did two numbers and i forget one, but the other one was Emma Bunton's Maybe. I remember freaking out because I knew that song and no one else did..
Anyway, i only remembered way later that she was in this video!
Emerson Drive is one of the bands that helped introduce me to country music. It pretty much is all abotu adam grefory, emerson drive, and the wilkinsons (ill get to them before the month is done).

Do you ever feel like you need a change? Hangout where no one knows your name?
Totes.
EVERY time i hear this i hear Ryan from Velvet Empire's popstars audition. it was so powerful and loud.
I also love listening to this when i'm on long auto rides... for example, my trips to Kingston. i used to imagine i was going somewhere more glamourlush... however, Kingston feels like another home to me no and i kind of miss it... sadface..

Saw Diamond Rings play during NXNE. fun night with MK and Ashley Olsen and their friends.
Tried to make it to kidstreet, didnt make it early enough. and we walked there....
Diamond Rings= the phrase "Bitch, you better work." he is too perfect. if i could paint rainbow across my eyes and have stupid hair, my life would be complete.

Along with Serena Ryder's cover of Good Morning Starshine, this song calms me the hell down.
I think it's cuz i've had my share of crazies... and that "nothing is gonna break me as long as i still believe". I think?
This video is amazing because of Stacey being in it as well as Divine Brown.
Sometimes I feel like Hayden in this video: performing and having fun, doing what i do. then i get a dose of crazy doing something in an effort to screw me up.
But i will evade the crazies. because i still believe.

This song reminds me of driving around in Kingston, going to Sakura, hanging out with MK. good times. Fefe reminds me of the early years of high school. She was a black girl rock singer. She showed me that I could one day be an asian folk singer... thats a lie.
She makes me happy.
And then there was the time that Jesse and I thought we were gonna get pummeled by her entourage...

The reason I think I love this song is because of the video. It shows many different pairs: friends, boyfriends, hetero couples, parent-child, possibly a lesbian couple?, friends. It shows that what we argue about can be fixed with us not being lazy in relationships. Howevs, I would have liked to see Theo have a partner in the video. it's just him and the piano, and that piano is quite the lazy lover... it just sits there..
Theo won Canadian Idol in a year that I didn't think he stood a chance and boy went and won it all. I am kind of mad that I missed all of his shows at the supermarket but am looking forward to the ones to come.

Who's the next winner? Me.
I remember reading an interview about this video with Masia in Now Magazine. She said she saturated the video with Asian imagery because thats how she felt she was being judged. like she couldn't be considered a rapper. she was a female asian rapper. they couldn't bill her without mentioning it. I completely identify with her sentiment because sometimes I feel that I am seen for my differences first and then only later realized that what makes me different doesn't change the outcome. that is essentially my cover letter applying for school boards... maybe i should add in a piece about miss masia.one.

It is hot as crap outside. therefore it is time to listen to THE summer hit... called summer hit...
This song reminds me of watching French Kiss in the morning while getting ready for school or work. My niece also got into this one hard. Simpler times those were.

I remember picking up a Cineplex magazine in 2004 and reading a review of his ep called "the EP". I thought just based on the tiny photo that he looked really young. possibly my age? and yup. both born in 1987. saw Carry On on much a few days later then ran out and bought it at HMV. loved, played it in my brother's car ALL THE TIME! all the time. then in April of 2005 i bought "Before I Speak" after an exam at scartown's walmart because HMV didn't stock it... weird.
anyway, loved it, dug it. i really got into it when I would walk with my discman to the no frills to but chips and burritos. i remember walking over the bridge by rainbow village and singing miss behavin really loudly... so good.
i met kyle a few years later while he was on the Spring Awakening tour:
I was so happy at that moment. chillin with my hero.
Then summer 2010 i saw him in Hair on broadway and we talked about parkdale and being from Toronto. good times.

Never thought I'd connect deep with a Sweatshop Union song about the state of music.
The chorus is truth. Sick and tired of doing what you want, you go and turn it all into this. because, fyi, i've been singin this song for too long..
memory wise, this shoots me back to my first summer with a job. job= buying EVERY cd i ever wanted at futureshop.. i bought this one and listened to it on my discman as i walked back home. i also stopped at macdonalds in the walmart.

My niece and I have seen Carly three times in concert. first time we saw her she was opening up for Marianas Trench. We met her at the merch table and told her that we were there to see her (because we saw the trench before). she was adorbs. we took this:
We then saw her in her own show at Harbourfront.... only a handful of people were there. prob seats 200 and there were 25 people... and that was PPPPUUSHHHINGG it. but she put on a great acoustic set. including her alice in wonderland number.... Then we saw her open for the trench a third time at Massey Hall. it was better.. however the crowd didn't like her for some reason.
anyway, Tug of War was an awesome song because it has LAYERS!! LAYERS! it reminds me of Carmen Rasmusen's Be With You, but better.
